Hair Pigmentation vs Classic Tattoo: The Differences Unraveled

Hair pigmentation is gaining popularity as a solution for (advanced) hair loss, but is often confused with a classic tattoo. Although both techniques introduce pigment into the skin, there are important differences that determine the result and durability.

1. Purpose and Technique:

  • Classical Tattoo: Focuses on creating a work of art or expression on the skin. Uses various needles and pigments to create lines, shadows and colors.

  • Hair Pigmentation: Simulates hair stubble to create the illusion of fuller hair. Focuses on precision and naturalness using micro-needles and pigments that mimic hair color.

2. Pigment and Depth:

  • Classic Tattoo: Uses permanent ink that is applied deep into the dermis, making the tattoo permanent.

  • Hair Pigmentation: Usually uses semi-permanent, organic pigments placed in the upper layer (0.5-1.0mm) of the dermis. This creates a natural effect that gradually fades over time.

3. Equipment and Needles:

  • Classic Tattoo: Uses tattoo machines with a wide variety of needles depending on the desired effect.

  • Hair Pigmentation: Uses specialized equipment with micro-needles specially designed to create tiny dots that mimic hair stubble.

4. Sustainability:

  • Classic Tattoo: Permanent, unless removed with laser treatments.

  • Hair pigmentation: Semi-permanent, requires follow-up treatments to maintain the result.

5. Expertise:

  • Classic Tattoo: Requires artistic skills and knowledge of tattooing techniques.

  • Hair Pigmentation: Requires specialist knowledge of hair patterns, pigmentation and scalp anatomy.

Although hair pigmentation and classic tattoos are both pigmentation techniques, they differ significantly in purpose, technique, pigments and durability.

Hair pigmentation is a specialized procedure aimed at creating a natural-looking result for hair restoration, while classic tattoos serve as an artistic expression.
